Our Story - God's faithfulness
through generations

Since 1904, God has been writing a story in this place. A story of steady faithfulness, surrendered lives, and generations choosing to follow Him. Through seasons of growth and hardship, clarity and refining, He has sustained a people committed to worship, truth, and love. What you see today is not the result of one moment, but of decades of obedience to a faithful God. Threshold Church (formerly Newport First Baptist) is honored to continue the legacy of faithful biblical teaching and community that began in Newport more than a century ago. The story is still being written, and we’re grateful to be part of what God is continuing to do here.

Foundations

Faithful Foundations

Threshold Church has been part of this community for over a century. Long before we carried the name we do today, a group of ordinary believers gathered with a shared conviction: God’s Word would be their foundation. Obedience would be their response. And they would choose to live their lives for God and help others do the same.

Our church building was built by the church. It wasn't built to create something for themselves but to establish a place where God would be honored and His Word faithfully taught. Families gave what they had. They carried lumber, poured concrete, cooked meals, prayed faithfully and built not only a building but a community of people rooted in Scripture and ordered toward Christ.

From the beginning, this was never about reputation or affiliation or accomplishment. It was about following Jesus and sharing Him with others. Through changing seasons, cultural shifts, and many moments both wonderful and difficult, one thing has remained unchanged: the authority of Scripture and the call to worship God with surrendered lives. There have been seasons of hardship. Times when resources were thin. Moments when standing firm on biblical conviction cost comfort and ease. Through it all, worshiping God was this church's response.

Worship here was not confined to music or routine. It has always been understood that worship is more than songs we sing. It is a life laid down before God, shaped by obedience and dependence on His Spirit.

In every season, God has provided what was needed. Shepherds came and stayed, investing their lives deeply.
Generations discipled generations. These doors have remained open and not because of human resolve alone, but because of God’s sustaining grace.

Without marketing campaigns or blaring bullhorns, this place quietly became known as safe. The steady Presence of God among a godly people made space for any who were seeking Him. People have walked in broken, grieving, addicted, angry, and searching and found hope and family. They have found prayer, truth, and people willing to sit with them without flinching. This home was not because this church was filled with flawless people, but because it was filled with people who follow a faithful God.

We are profoundly grateful for those who came before us; for their prayers that still echo in these walls, for their willingness to sacrifice, for their refusal to idolize comfort over holiness, and for their steady commitment to follow Christ wherever He led.

Their faithfulness became our inheritance.
Their obedience laid our foundation.

And through it all, God has remained the same...faithful, holy, and present. He is still speaking. And we are still listening.

Generations of Steady Obedience

What began with conviction did not fade with time. Generation after generation has carried the call that started everything. Some of our family lived out almost their entire lives within these walls, serving faithfully until the Lord called them home. Children who once sat in these rooms now raise their own children here.

Through the years, many have served and supported what God is doing. Some served quietly behind the scenes. Others held visible roles of stewardship. Some quietly supported while others spoke out with conviction and even a little holy fire. But the common thread in all? What marked them was not personality or preference; it was rootedness.

“This is the church where God planted me,” one wonderful woman said. “I have seen people come and go. Trends come and go. But this is my home, and I will serve God here as long as He allows me.”

That posture of faithfulness shaped generations.

Fathers and mothers in the faith rose up here, not in title or biology but in spirit; teaching younger men and women how to become mature sons and daughters of God. Older saints opened their homes and their hearts.
They mentored, corrected, encouraged, and then released. Generations here were not segmented into demographics. They were family, all of them.

The building itself mirrors the story. The original structure, built by many willing hands, still stands — not as a relic, but as a living space where fellowship continues and children are taught. Over time, expansion followed obedience. Walls were added. Rooms were built. Space was made and remade and remade again, not once, but many times as needs arose. Each addition and enhancement reflects a people willing to give, to build, and to trust God’s provision for the future.

Songs have changed; Instruments have been updated; Methods have adapted to fit seasons, but Scripture has remained the anchor. Whether preached verse by verse or applied topically,

the authority of God’s Word has never been surrendered.

Mission, prayer, community, obedience; these have endured beyond trends, even when alignment with Scripture required hard decisions, cost comfort, or meant walking a narrower road for a season.

God has never failed to provide. Sometimes provision came financially. Other times it came through willing hands, surrendered hearts, and people who stepped forward in the waiting. There have been no empty seasons because someone was always willing to say, “Here I am.”

Unity here has not come from sameness. It has come from seeking God together; asking hard questions, humbly laying preferences down, grieving what was, and offering it back to Him when He led forward.

Different seasons. Same God. Same surrender.

We are living in the fruit of prayers prayed long before us. The reputation this church carries in the community rests on decades of integrity, service, and quiet perseverance. We stand on foundations we did not lay,
and we build today so that those who come after us will have something steady beneath their feet.

Through it all, Jesus has remained at the center.

A Renewed Clarity

In recent years, the same God who sustained this church across generations stirred a renewed hunger among us...a hunger for more of Him.

People were calling out for nearness, for deeper relationship. For more of God. Hungry for a life of holiness that was lived not performed, for obedience that was wholehearted, and for worship that extended beyond Sunday into everyday life.

Across generations, across ages, roles, and seasons of life, a shared prayer began to rise:

Lord, refine us. Make us faithful. Make us fully Yours.

As we were seeking God, He was speaking, but not to only one voice or one position or in one place. He was stirring hearts individually and collectively, drawing His people toward deeper surrender, deeper trust, and deeper alignment.

The same posture that had marked this church in decades past proved itself part of our heartbeat again with fresh urgency: choosing Him first, asking hard questions, laying comfort down, and stepping wherever He led. We were seeking His face, desperate to see Him more clearly. To love Him more deeply. And to know Him more intimately. And as we listened together, language began to form around what God had long been shaping among us. In time, that clarity found expression in a word: Threshold — a word that gives language to the kind of work God has been doing here and cultivating for generations. If you want to dive deeper into just how the name Threshold Church came to be, you can explore more HERE.

We walk with people in the in-between places of life.
We stand with them in moments of decision.
We believe transformation often happens in the space between what was and what will be.

Words cannot fully express our gratitude for the generations who came before us. We carry on that legacy. We care for the generations among us, and we are building for the generations still to come who will be part of this story.

And the story He is writing continues.

Where We Are Now

Today, we continue to carry the heartbeat that began when God first started writing the story of this church. We are a people anchored in Scripture, dependent on the Holy Spirit, committed to walking in obedience to Jesus, and desperate for deeper relationship with God. Worship that flows from surrendered lives is our goal. Prayer that is an ongoing conversation with God instead of a formality is our lifeline. Our preaching and teaching hold fast to the authority of God’s Word.

Because of how God loves us, we are a community that loves and values people...across generations, across seasons, across stories, inside and outside our doors. It has never been about us but about God and loving His family and the world around us.

We are by no means perfect, but our God is faithful, and He continues to refine us.

We believe holiness is not determined by our performance or perfection in how we behave. It is the posture of our hearts and lives — a posture formed in proximity to the presence of God. As we seek His face and allow Him to build our lives, transformation happens. Holiness follows behind closeness and relationship.

We cannot remain in the presence of a holy God and leave unchanged.

So we seek Him together. We ask the hard questions and do the hard things He asks of us. We carry joy and celebrate God’s goodness. We do our best and grow as we follow Him. We lay down comfort when He asks, and we move when and where He leads.

In the middle of real life — grief and celebration, doubt and decision, weakness and growth — we walk with one another toward Christ. And that love does not just stop at our doors. We don't walk toward Christ alone, and we do not keep the journey to ourselves. As we walk with one another, we also walk toward those still searching.

Above all, we belong to Jesus, and this is God’s story.

He has been faithful through every generation, and we trust Him to remain faithful still. Our prayer is simple: that our church will continue to reflect His goodness, His holiness, and His steadfast love,  and that we would remain faithful to Him in return.

We are Threshold Church — the Church In-Between — sharing Jesus as He is with people as they are, wherever they are.

This is our home.

And there is room here for you.
